I am not entirely confident that mermaids
know the sensation of wind. I know
that water moves. I know that it
can foam and bellow. But there is this
eerie and impossible stillness of air
that water only knows if it is empty:
The mermaids cannot imagine; will not.
They only breathe in what they can
enchant first. That which listens.
